This client’s husband had promised her the bathroom of her dreams. I gotta say, that’s a bold move…bold move.
Creating a beautiful bathroom presents enough challenges as it is but this bathroom also had a couple problems to solve on our way to “happily ever after”:
Storage- This bathroom was in desperate need of more storage space.
Heat- The large west facing wall (window wall) didn’t get any shade so getting ready for a cocktail party on a summer evening was a sweat fest.
Noise- The bathroom doors were noisy. They were double doors with clicking ball catches; very annoying and loud for a light sleeper who’s husband heads to work at 5.
Making dreams come true
We decided to use a 2’x4’ (that’s 2 feet by 4 feet) tile for the shower walls and the tub backsplash and brought it 10 feet up the wall. The floor was a combination of three different tiles (see below) to give it a bordered look. Two lights were added in the ceiling of the vanity “box” for extra light. The walls, which were originally wall paper that had been painted and textured over…were stripped to the drywall, smoothed and painted.
Storage- We added a cabinet upper on the commode wall for added storage, this created space without disrupting our beautiful design. We also made her current wall storage way more functional (click through the album above for an explanation).
Heat- All the lights were replaced with LEDs (because the generate very little heat). The exterior window was replaced with a more energy efficient vinyl window with privacy glass. We also added a Panasonic Whisper exhaust fan to the vaulted ceiling where there wasn’t one previously.
Noise- The clicking double doors were replaced with a contemporary styled white barn door with satin nickel hardware. The sliding is virtually silent and we were able to mount it so close to the wall that barely any light gets through.
